The video provides a step-by-step walkthrough from unboxing to first project, covering all kit components and accessories.
Kit contents
Your Vilros Pi Zero Max Kit includes:
- Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W (or Pi Zero W depending on kit variant)
- MicroSD card with pre-loaded Raspberry Pi OS
- 5V micro-USB power supply
- Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable or adapter
- Micro-USB OTG adapter and/or USB hub
- Protective case
- GPIO header (pre-soldered or press-fit)
- USB keyboard and mouse
- Breadboard and jumper wires (for electronics projects)
- Basic electronic components (LEDs, resistors, buttons)
- Quick start guide and project ideas
Verify all components are present. You'll also need a monitor or TV with HDMI input.
Assembly & connections
- Install GPIO header (if needed): If your Pi Zero doesn't have a pre-soldered header, install the included GPIO header using the press-fit rig or soldering. See our Pi Zero header rig instructions.
- Install in case: Place the Pi Zero into the protective case, ensuring all ports are accessible through case openings. Close and secure the case.
- Insert microSD card: Insert the pre-loaded microSD card into the slot on the underside of the Pi Zero.
- Connect display: Use the mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to connect the Pi Zero to your monitor or TV.
- Connect peripherals: Attach the micro-USB OTG adapter or USB hub to the Pi Zero's USB port (marked "USB"). Connect the included keyboard and mouse.
- Connect power: Plug the power supply into the port marked "PWR". The Pi Zero will boot automatically.
Configuration & use
After first boot and initial setup (see Pi Zero Basic Kit guide for setup steps), your Pi Zero Max Kit is ready for projects:
- GPIO projects: Use the included breadboard, jumper wires, LEDs, and components to build circuits. Connect components to the GPIO header and control them with Python using the
gpiozerolibrary. - Learning resources: Try the included project ideas or browse our Projects section for Pi Zero-compatible tutorials.
- WiFi connectivity (Pi Zero W / Zero 2 W): Take advantage of built-in WiFi for IoT projects, remote access (SSH), or network-connected sensors.
- Compact applications: The Pi Zero's small form factor makes it ideal for portable projects, wearables, camera systems (with Pi Zero Camera Cable), and embedded applications.
Example starter project: Try blinking an LED:
- Connect a 220Ω resistor to GPIO 17 (physical pin 11).
- Connect an LED's long leg (anode) to the resistor, short leg (cathode) to ground (physical pin 6).
- Run this Python code in Thonny:
from gpiozero import LED from time import sleep led = LED(17) while True: led.on() sleep(1) led.off() sleep(1)
The LED should blink on and off every second. Press Ctrl+C to stop the program.
