Product overview
The Vilros Deluxe Heavy Duty Hammer-in Header Rig is designed to quickly install 40-pin GPIO headers on Raspberry Pi Zero boards without soldering. The rig holds the board and header in perfect alignment while you apply pressure to seat the pins.

Installing the GPIO header
- Prepare the rig: Open the Vilros header installation rig. The rig has a recessed area shaped to fit the Pi Zero.
- Position the Pi Zero: Place your Pi Zero board into the rig's recessed holder, component side up. Ensure it's fully seated and aligned.
- Insert the header: Place the 40-pin GPIO header into the mounting holes on the Pi Zero. The long pins should face down through the Pi into the rig. The plastic spacer sits on top of the Pi.
- Close the rig: Carefully close the top portion of the rig, ensuring it seats evenly over the GPIO header plastic spacer.
- Apply pressure: Using a rubber mallet or similar tool (or press firmly by hand if the rig is designed for hand pressure), apply even, steady pressure to seat the pins. You'll feel resistance, then the pins will push into the board's GPIO holes.
- Open and inspect: Open the rig and carefully remove the Pi Zero. Check that all 40 pins are inserted evenly and fully seated. Gently wiggle to test the connection - the header should be secure.
Note: This is a mechanical press-fit installation, not soldering. The pins are designed to make reliable contact through friction. For the most secure connection, some users choose to solder the header after press-fitting.
Tips & best practices
- Alignment matters: Ensure the Pi Zero and header are perfectly aligned before applying pressure. Misalignment can bend pins or damage the board.
- Even pressure: Apply pressure evenly across the entire header. Avoid pressing one side harder than the other.
- Inspect before use: After installation, visually inspect all pins from the underside. All should extend equally.
- Optional soldering: For the most secure connection (recommended for projects with frequent GPIO access or movement), solder the pins after press-fitting.
