Tutorial: How to Update A Raspberry Pi

Like any other computer, your Raspberry Pi sometimes needs to be updated in order to run efficiently and safely. Fortunately, updating your Pi is quite easy.

First, open the Terminal app on your Pi. You’ll see the icon for it in the menu bar, or you can open it from the Raspberry menu under Accessories.

Once you’ve opened the Terminal, simply type the following command and hit ENTER:

sudo apt update

When that process finishes, type the following command and hit ENTER:

sudo apt full-upgrade

Keep an eye on the screen while this process is running. It can be a lengthy process, but occasionally it may prompt you for information. If you miss a prompt, the Pi will stop updating and wait for you, which will make the process take even longer.

Once the update is complete, you’ll need to reboot your Pi, either from the Raspberry menu or with a Terminal command:

sudo reboot

That’s it! Your Pi will restart with its updates in place.
