Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ (For Raspberry Pi 5)

In Stock

SKU: SC1166

The M.2 HAT+ allows users to connect M.2-format PCIe and NVMe devices to the PCIe FPC connector on Raspberry Pi 5.

This item is offered as just the hat as well as in kit for with an SSD from Raspberry Pi

FEATURES:
•4 Gbits/s PCIe 2.0 interface provides fast (~450Mbytes/s) data transfer to and from NVMe SSD drives and other PCIe accessories
•Conforms to the HAT+ specification
•Automatically detected by the latest Raspberry Pi software/firmware
•Supplied with a 16mm stacking header and spacers/screws to enable the M.2 HAT+ to be fitted to a Raspberry Pi 5 with the Active Cooler in

Overview

Raspberry Pi 5’s single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface is exposed on a 16-pin, 0.5mm- pitch FPC connector; the M.2 HAT+ M Key is a mechanical adapter board that converts between this connector and a subset of the M.2 standard. It supports devices that have the M.2 M key edge connector, in the 2230 and 2242 form factors. It is capable of supplying up to 3A to connected M.2 devices.

The Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ conforms to the Raspberry Pi HAT+ specification and is autodetected by the latest Raspberry Pi software/firmware. It is supplied with a 16mm stacking header and threaded spacers, so it can be fitted to a Raspberry Pi 5 with the Raspberry Pi Active Cooler in place.

Speedy drive access. Wrong spacer pins in kit if you have a case or cooler, GPIO pins bad fit.

There's a line now present on the M2 Hat+ "about page" that someone has edited in: The M.2 HAT+ is only compatible with the Raspberry Pi Case for Raspberry Pi 5 if you remove the lid and the included fan. The same appears true for the Vilros RP5 case.

I already have the RP5 Active Cooler (SC1148) , and the Vilros RP5 case (VILP279). The tall spacers that come with the M.2 HAT are slightly too short to go over the cooler if you want to put the case cover back on. The stacking pin extensions are long and push through the M.2 HAT, but are also short enough that they don't push through to any usable length because the cooling fan is in the way, and even if they did, the case lid with the extensions blocks the pins.

I didn't use the pin extenders and made a frustrating trip to the computer store for some long spacer screws. I also ended up not using the pin header extension, had to carefully position my power and I2C pins before putting on the M.2 HAT, and pulling the wires out of the way. I'm sure it would be more frustrating if using SPI devices, as they take even more pins.

With those small modifications, the setup works if I'm not rewiring pins. The adaptor itself works great, the NVMe drive is lightning fast compared to my V90 speed SD card. The difficulty to access GPIO pins for future projects and too-short spacer pins combine to lose a star.

Easy install, good speeds

Was happy to finally have an official product from the foundation! Installation was a breeze and of course, native support with Pi OS. Everything working as normal, but faster. Only wish they either built it to fit inside the existing case WITH the lid on - or offered the ability to purchase (or print) a replacement lid that seats properly over the NVMe HAT.
