While the tech giants are building expensive data centers to power their AI's, some Raspberry Pi users are figuring out how to run AI on their local devices. For makers interested in exploring "edge AI", this opens the door to building private AI assistants, chatbots, and other intelligent applications without relying on cloud services.
One of our customers, Jim Chundevalel, recently documented his experience building a dedicated Raspberry Pi 5 LLM using Ollama and Google's open-source Gemma 4 model. His detailed guide walks you through the real-world engineering challenges of running AI on Raspberry Pi.
While this project uses just a Raspberry Pi 5 to complete computations, Jim has also documented his experimentations with Raspberry Pi's AI HAT+ 2.
His results are extremely promising - while the Raspberry Pi may not be as fast as a multi-million dollar data center, these projects show that local AI projects can be accessible, private, and cost-effective.
