Camera Doesn't Fit a Raspberry Pi Zero

The Raspberry Pi Zero has a smaller camera port than other Pi models. Learn which adapter you need to connect official Raspberry Pi cameras to your Pi Zero.

The camera port difference

The Raspberry Pi Zero and Pi Zero W include a CSI camera port, but it's physically smaller than the camera port on other Raspberry Pi models (Pi 2, 3, 4, 5).

The problem: The standard ribbon cable that ships with official Raspberry Pi cameras (Camera Module v1, v2, v3, HQ Camera) will not fit the Pi Zero's smaller camera connector.

The solution: You need a Raspberry Pi Zero Camera Adapter cable - a special ribbon cable with a smaller connector on one end (for the Pi Zero) and a standard connector on the other (for the camera module).

Pi Zero camera adapter

The Raspberry Pi Zero Camera Adapter is a ribbon cable specifically designed to bridge the size difference between the Pi Zero's camera port and standard camera modules.

Where to get it: These adapters are widely available from electronics retailers. While Vilros does not currently stock this specific adapter, it's available from most Raspberry Pi accessory suppliers.

What to look for: Ensure the adapter cable is labeled as "Raspberry Pi Zero Camera Adapter" or similar. It should have:

  • A smaller connector for the Pi Zero camera port
  • A standard connector for the camera module
  • Adequate length (typically 15-30cm)

Compatible cameras

Once you have the adapter cable, the following official Raspberry Pi cameras are compatible with the Pi Zero:

  • Camera Module v1 (5MP): Original camera module (discontinued but still functional)
  • Camera Module v2 (8MP): Improved 8-megapixel camera
  • Camera Module v3 (12MP): Latest camera with autofocus and improved low-light performance
  • HQ Camera (12.3MP): High-quality camera with C/CS-mount lens support
  • NoIR cameras: Infrared-sensitive versions of Camera Module v2 and v3

Note: All cameras work identically once the adapter cable is connected - the Pi Zero supports the same camera software as other Pi models.

Connecting the camera

  1. Power off the Pi Zero: Always disconnect power before connecting or disconnecting the camera.
  2. Locate the camera port: On the Pi Zero, the CSI camera port is located between the HDMI and USB ports.
  3. Open the connector: Gently pull up the black plastic tab on the camera port to open it.
  4. Insert the adapter cable: Slide the small end of the adapter cable into the Pi Zero camera port with the silver contacts facing toward the HDMI port. Push the black tab down to lock it.
  5. Connect the camera: Attach the other end of the adapter cable to the camera module in the same way (silver contacts toward the camera lens).
  6. Enable the camera: Boot the Pi Zero and enable the camera interface in raspi-config or Raspberry Pi Configuration.
  7. Test the camera: Use libcamera-hello or similar commands to verify the camera works.
