Vilros Retro Pi Kit USB stick explained

The 'Vilros Retro Pi USB stick' included with Vilros kits is a microSD-to-USB adapter—not a flash drive. Learn how to use it to read, write, and reflash microSD cards on your computer.

What is the USB stick?

If you've purchased a Vilros Retro Pi kit or Raspberry Pi starter kit, you may have received a small USB device labeled "USB stick" or "SD card adapter." This is not a traditional flash drive—it's a microSD-to-USB adapter.

The adapter allows you to:

  • Read and write files on your Raspberry Pi's microSD card using a computer
  • Reflash the microSD card with a new operating system
  • Transfer ROMs to RetroPie via the card
  • Back up or modify files on the card without booting the Pi

How it works

The adapter has two ends:

  • One end: A slot for inserting a microSD card
  • Other end: A USB connector that plugs into your computer

When you insert a microSD card into the adapter and plug it into your computer's USB port, the card appears as a removable drive—just like a USB flash drive.

Using the adapter

  1. Remove the microSD card from your Raspberry Pi (power off the Pi first)
  2. Slide the microSD card into the adapter (it should click into place—don't force it)
  3. Plug the adapter into a USB port on your computer
  4. The card appears as a drive in File Explorer (Windows), Finder (Mac), or your file manager (Linux)

You can now read, write, or delete files on the card as needed.

Important notes

  • Orientation matters: The microSD card should slide in smoothly. If it doesn't fit, try rotating the card 180 degrees.
  • Eject before removing: Always safely eject the drive (Safely Remove Hardware on Windows, Eject on Mac) before unplugging the adapter.
  • Partitions may be hidden: Raspberry Pi OS creates multiple partitions on the card. Windows may only show the small boot partition—this is normal.

Reflashing SD cards

The adapter is commonly used to reflash microSD cards with new images or operating systems. Here's how:

  1. Download Raspberry Pi Imager from raspberrypi.com/software
  2. Insert the microSD card into the adapter and plug into your PC
  3. Open Raspberry Pi Imager
  4. Choose your Raspberry Pi model, OS, and storage device (select the adapter/card)
  5. Click "Write" to flash the OS onto the card
  6. Eject the card safely and insert it into your Raspberry Pi

This process erases the card and writes a fresh OS image—useful if you want to switch operating systems, fix a corrupted installation, or start fresh.

Troubleshooting

Card not detected

  • Make sure the microSD card is fully inserted into the adapter (it should click)
  • Try a different USB port on your computer
  • Check that the card isn't locked (some microSD card adapters have a physical lock switch)

Card shows much smaller capacity than expected

This is normal for Raspberry Pi OS cards. The OS creates multiple partitions, and Windows only shows the small boot partition. To see the full capacity, reformat the card using Raspberry Pi Imager (select "Erase" as the OS).

Can't remove the microSD card from the adapter

Gently push the card in slightly—many adapters use a spring-loaded mechanism where pushing the card releases it.
