Overview
Seeing vertical lines or display artifacts on your official Raspberry Pi 7-inch touchscreen? This is usually caused by a loose ribbon cable, incorrect GPIO wiring, or power supply issues.
Work through these checks to fix the problem.
Check wiring
The most common cause: loose ribbon cable
A slightly loose ribbon cable is the most common reason for touchscreen display issues, including vertical lines.
Re-seat the DSI ribbon cable
- Turn your Raspberry Pi off
- Locate the DSI connector: This is between the HDMI and USB ports on the Pi
- Remove the ribbon cable: Gently pull up the black plastic clip, then remove the cable
- Check cable condition: Inspect for tears, kinks, or damaged connectors
- Reinsert firmly: Push the ribbon cable all the way into the DSI port
- Lock the connector: Press down the black plastic clip
- Power on and test
Check GPIO power wiring
Make sure you're only using two GPIO wires:
- 5V power wire: One wire should connect 5V from the Pi to the display
- Ground wire: One wire should connect GND from the Pi to the display
- Only two wires: Do not connect extra GPIO wires - only 5V and GND are needed
Incorrect GPIO wiring can cause power instability and display artifacts.
Check power supply
The official touchscreen draws significant power:
- Use adequate power supply: At minimum 5V 2.5A, but 3A recommended when using the touchscreen
- Official supply recommended: The official Raspberry Pi power supply provides stable, adequate power
- Check cable quality: A poor USB cable can cause voltage drops
Insufficient power can cause vertical lines, flickering, or unstable display behavior.
Check Raspberry Pi OS and updates
The display officially supports only Raspberry Pi OS:
- Use Raspberry Pi OS: If you're using a different or custom OS, we can't guarantee the display won't have issues. It's best to troubleshoot with Raspberry Pi OS
- Keep OS updated: Make sure your Raspberry Pi OS is up to date
Update your system:
- Open Terminal
- Update package lists:
sudo apt-get update - Upgrade packages:
sudo apt full-upgrade - Reboot after updates
Further help
If vertical lines persist after checking wiring, power, and OS:
- Test with HDMI: Connect your Pi to a regular HDMI monitor to rule out Pi hardware issues
- Try different resolution: Edit
/boot/config.txtto try different display resolutions - Check for interference: Move the ribbon cable away from power cables or other sources of electromagnetic interference
- Test minimal setup: Disconnect all other peripherals and test with just the touchscreen
