Overview

Problems with the Raspberry Pi Camera Module or HQ Camera are almost always fixed with one of the following solutions. Work through these steps in order to diagnose and fix your camera issue.

Check setup and installation

Verify your camera is properly set up and installed:

  • Follow the setup guide: Check the setup guide included with your camera module for proper installation steps
  • Verify physical connection: Make sure the camera module is firmly connected to the camera port on your Raspberry Pi

Re-seat the camera cable

The most common fix:

Camera cable connection issues fix the problem most of the time. The small cables only have to be slightly out to fail.

  1. Power off your Pi
  2. Remove the cable: Gently pull up the black plastic clip on the camera port, then remove the ribbon cable
  3. Check cable direction: Make sure the metal contacts on the cable face the correct direction:
    • At the camera module end, contacts should face toward the camera board
    • At the Raspberry Pi end, contacts should face toward the HDMI port (away from USB ports)
  4. Reinsert the cable: Push the cable firmly into the port, then press down the black plastic clip
  5. Power on and test

Cable direction is crucial: If the metal part of the ribbon cable isn't oriented the right way, there will be no connection at all.

Enable the camera in raspi-config

Check that the camera is enabled:

  1. Open terminal
  2. Run raspi-config:
    sudo raspi-config
  3. Navigate to "Interface Options"
  4. Select "Camera"
  5. Enable the camera if it's not already enabled
  6. Reboot when prompted

Update your software

Ensure you have the latest camera software:

  1. Open terminal
  2. Update package lists:
    sudo apt-get update
  3. Upgrade packages:
    sudo apt full-upgrade
  4. Reboot after updates complete

Reboot the Pi

Try rebooting if you've changed the camera while powered on:

  • Power off first: Always turn off your Pi before connecting or disconnecting the camera
  • Then reboot: Use sudo reboot or the shutdown menu

Operating system compatibility

Use the latest Raspberry Pi OS:

  • Raspberry Pi OS required: The camera module is only officially supported by Raspberry Pi OS
  • Use latest version: Make sure you're using a recent version of Raspberry Pi OS (Bookworm or newer recommended)
  • HQ Camera requirement: If you're using the HQ Camera and an older OS like Jessie, you will need to reinstall a fresh SD card image with the latest Raspberry Pi OS
