Overview

Is your Raspberry Pi 3 or 3B+ not working as expected? Most issues are caused by outdated OS, insufficient power supply, or poor-quality SD cards rather than hardware defects.

This guide covers the most common reasons for Raspberry Pi 3/3B+ boot problems and how to fix them.

Check the operating system

Use the latest Raspberry Pi OS:

  • Raspberry Pi 3 requires updated OS: Only recent Raspberry Pi OS releases fully support the Pi 3 and 3B+ features
  • Download fresh OS: Get the latest Raspberry Pi OS from raspberrypi.com/software
  • Use Raspberry Pi Imager: The easiest way to write a fresh OS to your SD card
  • Pre-installed SD cards: You can also purchase pre-installed microSD cards from Vilros with the latest OS

Check the power supply

The Raspberry Pi 3 requires more power than previous models:

  • Minimum requirement: 5V 2.5A power supply recommended
  • Try a different power supply: If your Pi is unstable, reboots randomly, or won't boot, the power supply may be insufficient
  • Use official power supply: The official Raspberry Pi power supply is designed specifically for stable operation
  • Signs of power problems: Rainbow square in corner of screen, random reboots, USB devices not working

Underpowered Raspberry Pis exhibit strange behavior that looks like hardware failure but is actually power starvation.

Check the SD card quality

SD card quality matters:

  • Avoid cheap or "no-name" SD cards: These are a false economy - many posts on Raspberry Pi forums document issues with poor-quality SD cards
  • Use Class 10 or better: Look for cards rated Class 10, UHS-I, or better
  • Recommended brands: SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston are reliable choices
  • Re-seat the SD card: Remove power, take the SD card out, push it back in firmly, and try again. If the card isn't quite seated properly, the Pi may show some lights but won't work correctly

A corrupted or low-quality SD card is one of the most common causes of Raspberry Pi problems.

Check the indication LEDs

The LED indicators tell you what's happening:

  • Red LED (power): Should be solid red when powered on. If off, check your power supply
  • Green LED (activity): Should flicker when reading the SD card. If it doesn't flicker at all, or flickers rapidly without staying solid, the Pi cannot read the SD card

Normal LED behavior:

  1. Plug in power
  2. Red LED turns on immediately (solid)
  3. Green LED starts flickering (reading SD card)
  4. Green LED flickers periodically as the system boots

If green LED never flickers: SD card problem - re-seat the card or re-flash it with fresh OS.

If green LED only flashes rapidly: SD card cannot be read - likely corrupted or incompatible card.
