Overview

Wondering if your Arduino Nano is damaged or defective? The fastest way to check is to look for the power LED when you plug it into your computer.

This guide will help you verify whether your Arduino Nano has a hardware problem.

Check the power LED

The most reliable indicator of a working Arduino:

  1. Plug the board into a USB port: Connect your Arduino Nano to your computer using a USB cable
  2. Look for the green power LED: A small green LED near the USB port should illuminate immediately
  3. If the LED lights up: Your Arduino is receiving power and the basic power circuit is working
  4. If the LED does not light up: Your Arduino may be damaged, or you may have a bad USB cable

Power LED location:

  • Arduino Nano: Green power LED is located near the USB connector on the board
  • Arduino Uno: Green power LED is located near the reset button
  • Arduino Mega: Green power LED is near the barrel jack power connector

Additional checks

If the power LED lights up but you still have problems:

  • Try the Blink example: Upload the built-in Blink sketch (File → Examples → 01.Basics → Blink) - if it uploads and runs, your Arduino is working
  • Check the L LED: Most Arduinos have a second LED labeled "L" connected to pin 13. The Blink sketch should make this LED blink on and off
  • Test different USB ports: Try different USB ports on your computer - some ports provide more stable power
  • Try a different USB cable: A bad cable can cause upload errors even if the power LED works

If uploads fail:

See Cannot upload to Arduino Nano for upload troubleshooting steps.

Further help

If the power LED does not light up:

  • Try a different USB cable: Make sure you're using a cable that supports both power and data (not just charging)
  • Try a different computer: Test on another computer to rule out USB port issues
  • Check for physical damage: Look for bent pins, burned components, or damaged connectors
  • Contact support: If you purchased from Vilros and the power LED does not light up with a known-good cable, contact support at support@vilros.com or call 855-207-9254 with your order number
