Overview

Bluetooth problems are rare with the Raspberry Pi. But when they happen, it is most likely because the operating system is out of date or too old.

This guide will help you troubleshoot Bluetooth connectivity issues on Raspberry Pi boards with built-in Bluetooth (Raspberry Pi 3, 4, 5, Zero W, Zero 2 W, and Pi 400).

Common causes

Why Bluetooth might not work:

  • Outdated operating system: The most common cause of Bluetooth issues is running an old version of Raspberry Pi OS
  • Corrupted OS installation: System files may be damaged or incomplete
  • Incompatible Bluetooth device: Some older Bluetooth devices may not be fully supported
  • Driver issues: Missing or outdated Bluetooth drivers

Recommended solution

Re-write the microSD card with fresh Raspberry Pi OS:

  1. Download Raspberry Pi Imager: Get the latest version from raspberrypi.com/software
  2. Insert your microSD card: Use a card reader to connect your microSD card to your computer
  3. Run Raspberry Pi Imager: Launch the Imager application
  4. Choose OS: Select "Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit)" recommended for Pi 3/4/5, or "Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit)" for older boards
  5. Choose storage: Select your microSD card (all data will be erased)
  6. Write: Click Write and wait for the process to complete
  7. Boot your Pi: Insert the microSD card into your Raspberry Pi and power it on

A fresh OS installation resolves most Bluetooth issues by ensuring you have the latest drivers and system files.
