Which Cases Will Fit a Raspberry Pi 4?

Raspberry Pi 4 has a different port layout than Pi 3, so not all cases are compatible. Learn what to look for when choosing a Pi 4 case.

Case compatibility

Vilros is excited to offer a variety of cases manufactured by Vilros, the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and other manufacturers. Only cases specifically designed for Raspberry Pi 4 will fit your Pi 4 board.

Pi 3 cases will not fit Pi 4 due to port layout changes.

Port differences from Pi 3

The Raspberry Pi 4 has a different port layout compared to the Pi 3 Model B/B+, which is why older cases don't fit:

Key differences:

  • Power: Pi 4 uses USB-C instead of micro-USB
  • Video: Pi 4 has dual micro-HDMI ports instead of a single full-size HDMI port
  • Ethernet port position: Slightly different placement
  • Audio/video jack: Same position but cases need accurate cutouts

Because of these changes, Pi 3 cases will have misaligned cutouts for ports, making them incompatible with Pi 4.

Types of Pi 4 cases

Basic plastic cases:

  • Affordable ($5-15)
  • Protect against dust and minor impacts
  • Limited cooling (passive only)
  • Good for desktop use with light workloads

Cases with fans:

  • Include an active cooling fan
  • Prevent thermal throttling during intensive tasks
  • Recommended for gaming, overclocking, or heavy loads
  • See our fan installation guide

Aluminum cases:

  • Act as a passive heatsink
  • Better cooling than plastic cases without fan noise
  • More expensive but more effective cooling
  • Examples: Vilros Wave Case, official Raspberry Pi aluminum case

Specialized cases:

  • Touchscreen cases (for use with the official 7" touchscreen)
  • DIN rail cases (for industrial mounting)
  • Cluster cases (for building Pi clusters)
  • Media center cases (designed for home theater use)

Finding Pi 4-compatible cases

What to look for:

  • Explicitly labeled "Raspberry Pi 4" or "Pi 4 compatible"
  • Cutouts for USB-C power and dual micro-HDMI ports
  • Access to GPIO header if you plan to use HATs or electronics
  • Adequate cooling (passive heatsinks or active fans) for your workload

Avoid:

  • Cases labeled only for "Raspberry Pi 3" or "Pi 3 B+"
  • Cases without USB-C or dual micro-HDMI cutouts
  • Cases that don't mention Pi 4 compatibility
