Product overview
The Vilros Deluxe Pin Header Install Steel Rig for Raspberry Pi Pico provides a durable, precision tool for installing pin headers without soldering. The steel construction offers superior strength and alignment compared to plastic rigs.
Compatible with: Raspberry Pi Pico, Pico H, Pico W, Pico WH
Includes: Steel header installation rig, 10 hammer-in pin headers (typically 2×20 pin headers)
Installation method: Press-fit (mechanical connection). Soldering optional for permanent projects.
Installing pin headers
- Open the steel rig: The Vilros steel rig has a hinged or separable design. Open it to access the Pico mounting area.
- Position the Pico: Place your Raspberry Pi Pico into the rig's recessed slot, ensuring it's fully seated and aligned.
- Insert headers: Place the pin headers into the Pico's castellated edge holes. The long pins face down through the Pico into the rig. The plastic spacer rests on top of the Pico.
- Close the rig: Carefully close the steel rig, ensuring it presses evenly on both header spacers.
- Apply hammer strikes: Using a rubber mallet or hammer (with gentle, controlled strikes), tap the top of the closed rig to seat the pins. The steel construction withstands repeated use better than plastic alternatives.
- Inspect: Open the rig and remove the Pico. Check that all 40 pins are inserted evenly and perpendicular to the board.
Important: The steel rig is more durable than plastic alternatives and can handle repeated installations. Handle with care to avoid pinching fingers when closing the rig.
Tips for best results
- Alignment is critical: Ensure the Pico and headers are perfectly aligned before closing the rig.
- Controlled strikes: Use gentle, controlled hammer taps rather than heavy blows. Let the steel rig do the work.
- Even pressure: Ensure the rig closes evenly on both sides to seat pins uniformly.
- Inspect before use: Check all 40 pins from the underside. They should extend equally.
- Solder for permanence: While press-fit works, soldering ensures long-term reliability for projects with frequent breadboard use or movement.
- Steel durability: The steel rig can handle hundreds of installations, making it ideal for classrooms, workshops, or bulk header installations.
