Follow our complete setup guide for Magic Mirror V4:

The video covers hardware assembly, software installation, initial configuration, and how to add custom modules to your magic mirror.

What is Magic Mirror?

Magic Mirror² is an open-source modular smart mirror platform built on Raspberry Pi. Your Vilros Magic Mirror V4 kit combines a two-way mirror, display, and Raspberry Pi to create an interactive mirror that displays useful information such as:

  • Current time and date
  • Weather forecast
  • Calendar events
  • News headlines
  • Custom modules (transit, stocks, compliments, etc.)

The V4 kit includes updated hardware and software compatible with the latest MagicMirror² software platform.

Hardware assembly

Your Vilros Magic Mirror V4 kit typically includes:

  • Two-way mirror glass or acrylic
  • Monitor or display panel
  • Raspberry Pi (pre-configured or ready to configure)
  • Power supply
  • Mounting frame or enclosure
  • Cables and hardware

Assembly steps:

  1. Prepare the frame: Assemble the mirror frame or enclosure according to the included instructions. Ensure the two-way mirror is clean before installation.
  2. Mount the display: Secure the monitor or display panel inside the frame, facing the back of the two-way mirror. The display should be positioned so its image reflects through the mirror.
  3. Install the Raspberry Pi: Mount the Raspberry Pi (with microSD card installed) in the designated location within the frame or enclosure.
  4. Connect cables: Connect the Pi to the display via HDMI. Connect power to both the Pi and the display. Route cables neatly and secure them to avoid interference with the mirror.
  5. Install the two-way mirror: Carefully place the two-way mirror into the frame, ensuring it's secure and clean. The reflective side should face outward.

Software setup

If pre-configured: Your kit may include a Raspberry Pi with MagicMirror² software pre-installed. Power on the system and it should boot directly to the Magic Mirror interface.

If installing from scratch:

  1. Install Raspberry Pi OS (Lite or Desktop) on your microSD card.
  2. Boot the Pi and connect to your network (WiFi or Ethernet).
  3. Open Terminal and run the MagicMirror² installer:
    bash -c "$(curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MagicMirrorOrg/MagicMirror/master/installers/raspberry.sh)"
  4. Follow the installer prompts. The process may take 10-20 minutes.
  5. After installation, start MagicMirror²:
    npm run start

The default configuration displays a clock, calendar, current weather, weather forecast, and news feed. The mirror will start automatically on boot if configured.

Customization & modules

MagicMirror² is highly customizable through its config.js file (located in ~/MagicMirror/config/). You can:

  • Adjust module positions: Modules can be placed in different regions (top, bottom, left, right, center).
  • Configure weather: Update the weather module with your location and API key (OpenWeatherMap or similar).
  • Add calendar feeds: Link your Google Calendar, iCal, or other calendar services.
  • Install third-party modules: Browse the MagicMirror² 3rd party modules for additional features like transit times, smart home controls, Spotify, compliments, and more.

Edit config.js:

nano ~/MagicMirror/config/config.js

After making changes, restart MagicMirror²:

pm2 restart mm

Or manually restart from Terminal:

cd ~/MagicMirror npm run start
