Product overview

The Vilros Heavy Duty Pin Header Install Rig for Raspberry Pi Pico simplifies adding pin headers to your Pico board without soldering. The rig holds the Pico and headers in perfect alignment while pressure is applied to seat the pins.

Compatible with: Raspberry Pi Pico, Pico H, Pico W

Typical kit includes: Header installation rig, 2×20 pin headers (40 pins total)

Process: Press-fit installation (mechanical connection). Soldering is optional but recommended for permanent, high-reliability connections.

Installing headers

  1. Open the rig: Open the Vilros header installation rig. The rig has a recessed slot shaped to fit the Raspberry Pi Pico.
  2. Position the Pico: Place your Raspberry Pi Pico into the rig's slot, ensuring it's fully seated and aligned with the mounting area.
  3. Insert headers: Place the pin headers into the Pico's castellated edge mounting holes. The rig typically holds two rows of 20 pins each (40 total pins). Long pin ends should face down through the Pico into the rig. The plastic spacer rests on top of the Pico.
  4. Close the rig: Carefully close the rig's top section, ensuring it presses evenly on both header spacers.
  5. Apply pressure: Using a rubber mallet, press firmly, or apply hand pressure (depending on rig design), seat the pins. Apply even pressure across the entire length. You should feel the pins push into the Pico's castellated holes.
  6. Inspect: Open the rig and remove the Pico. Check that all pins are inserted evenly. The headers should be firmly seated and perpendicular to the board.

Note: This creates a mechanical press-fit connection. For the most secure and reliable connection, especially for projects involving movement or frequent breadboard insertion/removal, solder the pins after press-fitting.

Tips for best results

  • Alignment is critical: Ensure the Pico and headers are perfectly aligned before applying pressure. Misalignment can damage the Pico's castellated holes or bend pins.
  • Even pressure: Apply steady, even pressure to both header rows simultaneously. Avoid rocking or pressing one side first.
  • Inspect before use: Check that all 40 pins extend equally from the underside of the Pico. Any uneven pins may indicate incomplete seating.
  • Solder for permanence: While press-fit provides a working connection, soldering ensures long-term reliability. If you plan to use the Pico in a breadboard or socket frequently, soldering is highly recommended.
  • Alternative: Pre-soldered Pico H: If you prefer not to install headers yourself, consider purchasing a Raspberry Pi Pico H, which comes with pre-soldered headers.
