Why use Raspberry Pi for home automation?
- Local control: No cloud dependency. Your data stays private.
- Affordable: A Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) costs $55–75 vs. $150+ for commercial hubs.
- Flexible: Supports thousands of devices: smart lights, thermostats, cameras, sensors, door locks, and more.
- Open source: Customize everything. No vendor lock-in.
- Always-on: Low power consumption (~5W) makes it perfect for 24/7 operation.
The most popular home automation platform for Pi is Home Assistant, an open-source system with support for 2000+ devices and services.

- Home Assistant will show discovered devices. Click Configure for each device you want to add.
- For devices not auto-discovered, click Add Integration and search for your device brand (e.g., Philips Hue, TP-Link, Shelly).
Create an automation
- Go to Settings → Automations & Scenes.
- Click Create Automation → Start with an empty automation.
- Add a Trigger: Choose "Sun" and select "Sunset."
- Add an Action: Choose "Call service" → "light.turn_on" and select your lights.
