About the Arduino Fundamentals exam
The Arduino Fundamentals exam is an online test that validates your understanding of Arduino programming, electronics, and physical computing. Upon passing, you receive an official certificate from Arduino testifying to your skills—useful for job applications, educational programs, and professional portfolios.
As the world becomes more digitally sophisticated, demonstrating technical competency can set you apart. The Arduino Fundamentals certification shows employers and educators that you have hands-on Arduino experience and understand the concepts behind it.
What's covered
The exam tests your knowledge across eight core subject areas:
- Arduino IDE: Navigating the development environment, uploading sketches, using the serial monitor
- Programming logic: Variables, control structures, loops, functions
- Programming syntax & semantics: C++ fundamentals, Arduino-specific functions, data types
- Arduino boards: Board types, specifications, capabilities, pin configurations
- Electronic components: Resistors, LEDs, sensors, motors, and how they work
- Electricity: Voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's law, circuit basics
- Reading schematics & circuits: Circuit diagrams, breadboard layouts, wiring connections
- Frequency & duty cycle: PWM signals, analog vs digital output, timing
The exam is based on the concepts, skills, and components included in the Arduino Starter Kit. You can download the official Arduino exam guide for detailed topic breakdowns.
How to prepare
Use the Arduino Starter Kit
While not mandatory, Arduino strongly recommends the Arduino Starter Kit for exam preparation. The kit includes a project book with hands-on tutorials that cover all exam topics. Building the projects gives you practical experience with the concepts you'll be tested on.
The Starter Kit teaches you by doing—wiring circuits, writing code, and troubleshooting problems. This hands-on approach is exactly what the exam evaluates.
Work through the project book
Arduino recommends completing the projects in the Arduino Starter Kit project book as your primary study method. Each project introduces new concepts and builds on previous lessons, giving you a complete foundation in Arduino programming and electronics.
What to have on hand during the exam
You may want to have the following available during the test:
- Paper and a writing utensil for notes and calculations
- A calculator
- Your Arduino project book for reference
- Your Arduino board (optional, but can help visualize questions)
Make sure you have a stable internet connection for the duration of the exam.
Exam format
The Arduino Fundamentals exam is administered online. Here's what to expect:
- 36 questions
- 75 minutes to complete
- 70% passing score required
- Immediate results: You'll know right away whether you passed or failed
- One attempt per purchase: If you fail, you must purchase another exam attempt
- 1-year access: After purchasing, you have one year to take the exam
If you don't pass, you'll receive feedback on your performance in each topic area to help you prepare for a future attempt.
The exam is available in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and Simplified Chinese. The cost is $30 USD plus applicable taxes.
