Before you start, you'll need
- Raspberry Pi (model 3 or newer with Bluetooth)
- Nintendo Wii Remote
- Infrared LED or candle
- Python libraries (pygame, cwiid)
Install required software
About 15 minutes
Set up Python libraries for Wii remote communication.
- Open Terminal on Raspberry Pi.
- Update package lists: sudo apt-get update
- Install cwiid library: sudo apt-get install python3-cwiid
- Install pygame: sudo apt-get install python3-pygame
- Verify Bluetooth is enabled on your Pi.
You should see
Libraries are installed without errors.
Connect the Wii remote
About 10 minutes
Pair the Wii remote via Bluetooth.
- Create a Python script to pair the Wii remote.
- Run the script and press buttons 1 and 2 on the Wii remote simultaneously.
- Wait for the LEDs to stop flashing (indicates successful connection).
- The Wii remote is now paired with your Raspberry Pi.
import cwiid
print("Press 1+2 on Wii Remote...")
wiimote = cwiid.Wiimote()
print("Connected!")
wiimote.led = 1
print("Ready to use Wii Remote.")Keep the Wii remote close to the Pi during pairing.
You should see
Wii remote connects and LED 1 lights up.
Build the drawing application
About 35 minutes
Create a Python app that tracks IR and draws.
- Enable IR tracking on the Wii remote (it uses an IR camera).
- Set up an IR source (infrared LED or lit candle) as a pointer.
- Create a pygame window to display the drawing canvas.
- Map Wii remote IR coordinates to screen positions.
- Draw lines as the IR source moves.
- Use Wii remote buttons to change colors or clear the canvas.
You should see
The application runs and responds to IR movement.
It didn't work
Wii remote won't connect.
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled. Remove any previous Wii remote pairings. Hold buttons 1+2 during the pairing window. Try moving closer to the Pi.
IR tracking doesn't work.
The Wii remote IR camera needs a strong IR source. Use an infrared LED (not regular LED). A lit candle also works well. Ensure the IR source is in view of the Wii remote camera.
