Compact retro gaming

Picade Console is more compact and easier to build, but has a bunch of features liked a dedicated power button, better cable routing out the back of the console with a panel-mount USB-C connector for power, and retro-themed artwork.

Picade X HAT USB-C is packed full of useful features. Pimoroni uses simple DuPont connectors that just push in rather than fiddly screw terminals, and the speaker terminals are easy push-fit connectors.

There's dedicated power management on-board Picade X HAT USB-C; just plug your USB-C power supply into the back of Picade Console and it'll power your Pi through the Picade X HAT USB-C. The power button connected to the HAT means that once your Pi is safely shutdown, the power will be cut completely to the Pi. A simple press of the power button will boot your Picade Console up again.

Software setup

We recommend the RetroPie operating system for your Picade. You can download it from the RetroPie website and then burn it to a micro-SD card with Etcher.

Connect a USB keyboard to your Pi, and connect to Wi-Fi in the RetroPie menu. Press F4 to exit to the terminal and then type curl https://get.pimoroni.com/picadehat | bash to run the Picade HAT installer.

Reboot your Pi, if it doesn't prompt you to. Press the "Alt" key on your keyboard and then select "Configure input" to configure your Picade Console's controls. You'll find that the sound and power button should both be working now too!

Beautiful, fun, and an authentic retro experience

Overall, this is an awesome little kit! The packaging is beautiful, I had fun assembling it, and the build quality and final product are top notch. Instructions on the website are well written, and anyone can do this with a little technical experience. As the other reviewer stated, playing older games on the joystick can be difficult without a 4-way restrictor, so maybe shipping one with the product would have been nice. The arcade experience it gives is about as authentic as it gets, especially with the built in speaker. Be prepared to do extensive research on setting up buttons and configuration with RetroPie.
Speaking of RetroPie, my only real complaint is that this kit CANNOT be used with any other Raspbery Pi emulation systems. The HAT circuit board driver WILL NOT install on Lakka or Recalbox. So the joystick and buttons are useless on those OSs. The Pimoroni website states that it “recommends” you use RetroPie. No, it’s actually required that you use RetroPie. Don’t get me wrong, RetroPie works great and is well documented, but I love the Recalbox experience much better. Just be aware of this if you are interested in other OSs.

Great! I love it!

Fun to put together. However, I’d really love it if the joystick had a 4 way restrictor gate instead of 8 way. Very hard to play NES and games like arcade games like Pac-Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong. I ordered a 4 way restrictor gate to replace the 8 way that the Picade comes with. Maybe think about shipping one that lets the user adjust from 4 to 8 way like the Sanwa stick.
